I played this to the end and enjoyed it -- nice job!! It's an impressively expansive map for the time you had, which meant I spent more time with this game. The metroidvania sequencing is nicely done. It had some nice challenges, the heart-drops were nicely tuned, and I thought the checkpoints were well spaced. The look and behavior of the floating flower bubbles was creative and it was something different. My absolute favorite element here was the look of the upgraded sword (the smear frame) -- it was a welcome surprise that made me smile.
In terms of (hopefully helpful) feedback, I think adding invincibility after taking a hit (to avoid having the player get stuck in damage-loops) would be the change that would give you the biggest reward for your time. I know you've heard it, but sometimes it's nice to hear opinions from different players.
It was fun, nice work!
Hey thanks for the reply,
I am sorry to say that we are not updating the game anymore, both me and Riu are undergrad entering our final year but we are planing on participating in at least one more MVM this year.
hm. There is definitely a good Metroidvania skeleton here, but there are also many issues.
The character feels extremely stiff… the physics just feel really janky. The wall grab constantly caught my character while jumping, and then you have to wait a couple seconds to unstick from the wall. There are no invincibility frames after taking damage, so you can quickly drain all your health. The map says “8/8 pickups” right from the beginning, and getting new abilities doesn’t change that. The abilities themselves are just words… So it’s impossible to know when you actually got them (the health upgrade pickup didn’t actually add any health to my character). The level design and room designs are extremely basic and never pose much challenge, just a couple jumps and your done. For bugs, my character got stuck in a wall once but otherwise it was smooth sailing.
But for a game jam, I can see potential in it. If those issues were fixed, the room design refined, more enemies and interesting mechanics… it could be a solid game
None of the upgrades worked because I forgot to remove the debug object from the first room, it gives you all the pickups from the start.
Sorry 😬
I really liked the art, but there are a lot of repetitive enemies.
Good job
Thanks for the reply.
Yeah there are only 5 types of enemy, I thought the map would end up being smaller and the art took a lot more time then we planned so we couldn't fit more variety.
But it's still good
Thanks :)
Cool game. I like your level design. Good job done, respect)
Thank you for the review! :)
